Ibrahim Chappelle is the middle child of comedian Dave Chappelle and his wife, Elaine Chappelle. He was born in 2003, which puts him in his early twenties, and he grew up in rural southwestern Ohio rather than Los Angeles or New York. He isn’t a public figure. Most of what’s known about him comes from his father’s own stand-up material and interviews, plus a handful of family appearances.
That privacy is deliberate. Dave has spent years keeping his wife and children away from the press, and Ibrahim has largely stayed that way into adulthood.

Family Background
Dave Chappelle married Elaine Mendoza Erfe in 2001. Their first son, Sulayman, arrived that same year, Ibrahim followed in 2003, and their daughter Sanaa was born in 2009. Elaine is of Filipino heritage, so Ibrahim and his siblings have both African American and Filipino roots.
The children’s names reflect their father’s faith. Dave is Muslim, and all three kids were given names rooted in that tradition. Ibrahim is the Arabic form of Abraham, a central figure in Islam, Christianity and Judaism alike.
Education also runs deep on the Chappelle side of the family. Ibrahim’s paternal grandparents both worked in academia, and his grandmother, Yvonne Seon, was a professor and activist.
Growing Up in Ohio, Away From Hollywood
In the mid-2000s, the Chappelles settled near Yellow Springs, a small village in Greene County, Ohio, where Dave had spent part of his own childhood. Ibrahim was still a toddler at the time.
The move came around the same period Dave famously walked away from Chappelle’s Show and its lucrative Comedy Central deal. Whatever his full reasons for leaving, the result was that his kids grew up in a small town rather than on the celebrity circuit.
Dave has credited the local community for helping keep things that way. In a 2020 conversation with David Letterman, he pointed out that there are no paparazzi chasing his children in Ohio and said the town looks out for them.
The Kevin Hart Story
The most widely repeated anecdote about Ibrahim comes straight from his dad’s 2017 Netflix special, The Age of Spin.
As Dave tells it, a young Ibrahim came to him asking for $250 because Kevin Hart was performing nearby and he wanted to go. Dave took him. During the show, Ibrahim laughed hard at Hart’s set, which Dave played up for jealous comic effect, reminding the audience that he tells jokes for a living, too.
Hart then invited the father and son to dinner. Before Dave could answer, Ibrahim reportedly stepped in and accepted, telling Hart they hadn’t eaten in hours. It’s a small moment, but it’s one of the few real glimpses the public has of Ibrahim’s personality: confident, funny and completely unfazed by famous company.
Did Ibrahim Chappelle Try Stand-Up?
Yes, at least once. During the same 2020 Letterman interview, Dave said Ibrahim was the only one of his three children to have attempted stand-up comedy. According to Dave, his son performed a set at the Comedy Cellar in New York, one of the most respected comedy clubs in the country, and did well.
Dave was clearly proud, describing the attempt as brave and saying he loved that his son saw something beautiful in the art form and tried it for himself. In that interview, he also called Ibrahim a star athlete.
There’s no public record of Ibrahim pursuing comedy professionally since then, and no confirmed information about a career in entertainment.
Public Appearances
Ibrahim has made very few confirmed public appearances. The most notable came on October 27, 2019, when Dave received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Ibrahim was photographed there alongside his mother, siblings and grandmother as the family celebrated the honor.
Outside of family occasions like that, he has stayed out of public view. His younger sister Sanaa has had a slightly higher profile, having appeared alongside their father in the 2018 film A Star Is Born, but Ibrahim has not taken on any acting or media roles.
What Ibrahim Is Doing Now
Ibrahim’s current occupation, education and relationship status have not been publicly confirmed. He doesn’t appear to have any verified social media accounts, and he hasn’t given interviews.
That also means figures sometimes attached to his name online, such as a personal net worth, a specific college, or a girlfriend, aren’t supported by any reliable public record. Given that he has no known public career, any personal net worth estimate would be guesswork. His family’s wealth comes from his father’s career, not from anything Ibrahim has done publicly.
Why So Little Is Public
The short answer is that his parents chose it. Dave Chappelle is one of the most famous comedians in the world, but he has rarely brought his family into his public life beyond stories in his own act. Elaine rarely does interviews, and the children were raised in a community that respected that boundary.
Dave has also talked about how fatherhood changed him. In a 2017 CBS interview, he said everything shifted once he had kids, and that he took his work more seriously as a result.
For Ibrahim, the outcome is a life that’s connected to a famous name but not defined by it. What the public knows comes mostly through his father’s affectionate, often funny stories, and so far, that’s the way the family appears to want it.
