Jesse Mojo Shepard is an American short story writer and longtime horseman. He is the eldest child of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and actor Sam Shepard and actress O-Lan Jones. He was born in May 1970, which makes him 56 as of 2026. His only published book is Jubilee King (2003), a collection of stories set mostly in Northern California and the American West. Much of the book draws on his years working with horses as a polo groom, a ranch caretaker, and a wrangler on Western film sets.
Many people know him first as Sam Shepard’s son. He has kept a quiet, private life, though, and most of what is on record about him comes from the period around his book’s release.

Family Background
Sam Shepard married O-Lan Jones in 1969, and Jesse was born the following year. Jesse was the couple’s only child. By most accounts, his unusual name combines a nod to the outlaw Jesse James with “mojo,” the term for a Cajun good luck charm. That origin story has been repeated for years, but it has never been formally confirmed.
The household he grew up in was closely tied to the theater. O-Lan Jones acted in several of her husband’s early plays and later appeared in films including The Right Stuff and Lonesome Dove. The family’s circle also included Johnny Dark, Sam Shepard’s close friend, who had married O-Lan’s mother, Scarlett. That made Dark both a family friend and Jesse’s step-grandfather.
Sam Shepard left the marriage in the early 1980s after meeting actress Jessica Lange, and the divorce was finalized in 1984. After that, Jesse was raised largely by his mother, Johnny Dark, and Scarlett. Sam and Jessica Lange later had two children, Hannah Jane (born 1986) and Samuel Walker (born 1987), who are Jesse’s half-siblings.
The long friendship between Sam Shepard and Johnny Dark became the subject of the 2012 documentary Shepard & Dark. Jesse appears in it through archival footage. The pair’s decades of letters and photographs, some of which show Jesse, are now held in an archive at Texas State University’s Wittliff Collections.
A Childhood Around Horses
Jesse spent his early years in Mill Valley, California. The family then moved to the Flying Y Ranch, a horse-boarding property on the slopes of Mount Tamalpais where his father kept horses. Jesse later described those years, when he was around five to seven, as a happy time. The ranch itself was eventually torn down and replaced by an apartment complex that kept its name.
He learned to ride at about five but has said he didn’t take riding seriously until he was 18. After that, horses became his working life. By the early 2000s, he had spent roughly 15 years as a polo groom, and he played a little polo himself. He also worked as a movie wrangler, handling horses on location in Arizona, Texas, and Utah for made-for-TV Westerns. Stunt and crew credits under his name include Ned Blessing: The Story of My Life and Times (1993) and Don’t Come Knocking (2005), a film written by and starring his father.
When Jubilee King came out, he was working as caretaker of a ranch in Sonoma County, where he kept horses and goats and grew hay.
Jubilee King: His Debut Story Collection
Bloomsbury published Jubilee King in 2003. The book contains 12 short stories. Most are brief, single-scene pieces about people at quiet turning points, and horses appear throughout.
Some of the better-known stories include:
- “Jubilee King”, the title story. An aging horseman sneaks onto land he has lost to dig up the remains of a prized horse, hoping it can save his fortunes.
- “Night Shot”, a dry comic story told from the viewpoint of horse handlers on a Western film set whose co-star is a large bear.
- “Flaw in the Shelter”, in which a caretaker climbs a rain-slick roof to free a bird trapped in his chimney.
- “First Day She’d Never See”, about a man selling a car that can’t shift into reverse after his girlfriend’s death.
Reviews were mixed but generally encouraging. Several critics praised his plain, controlled prose and deadpan humor, and his skill at getting large meaning out of small events. Many also noted that his horses came across more vividly than some of his human characters. Nearly every review brought up his father, since both men wrote about horses, cowboys, and the West. Jesse said at the time that he wanted the stories to stand on their own and admitted that comparisons were probably unavoidable.
His literary influences are older ones. He named Chekhov, Tolstoy, Flannery O’Connor, John Cheever, Richard Yates, and Paul Bowles, and has described some of his stories as fable-like tales in which big plans go wrong.
He was also known for an old-fashioned way of working. He said he didn’t own a computer. He wrote his drafts by hand and typed them on a manual Olympia typewriter from the 1950s, and his editors were reportedly surprised to get a typewritten manuscript.
Relationship With Sam Shepard
Sam Shepard’s own relationship with his father was difficult. He contrasted it with his bond with Jesse, which he described as the opposite. Jesse told interviewers in 2003 that he was close to both of his parents despite their divorce, and that his father had strongly supported his writing. In 2003, the two appeared together at a reading at City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco, shortly after Sam published his own story collection, Great Dream of Heaven.
Sam Shepard died on July 27, 2017, at age 73, at his home in Kentucky. The cause was complications of ALS. Jesse was listed among his survivors, along with Hannah, Walker, and Sam’s sisters, Sandy and Roxanne Rogers.
